The term strategy is frequently seen as too grand a term causing teams to switch off the subject and focus merely on planning. To address this we often approach the subject using the phrase ‘clarifying the strategic context’ so that we’re not suggesting that a full-blown strategic analysis is necessarily needed. The questioning and probing approach frequently results in us then being asked to complete a strategic review as people and teams learn about the importance and purpose of everyone and everything needing a clear strategic context.

Strategy Formulation

Excellent leaders create conditions for success, establishing a shared sense of purpose and vision throughout their organisation. The development and communication of a strategy is the key mechanism to achieve this, aligning behaviours and guiding decision making.
A strategy sets out the ends to seek and how the organisation will develop an advantage. It also provides guidance on how to pursue these ends through a high level plan that defines how resources will be deployed.

Organisational Design

To execute your strategy effectively and achieve your ambitions, your organisational structure must be aligned with your business goals.

Organisations are most effective when they are designed to deliver the strategy, goals and plans. Working with the detailed needs of the strategy and business plan that set out the required types and numbers of competencies, effective teams also take account of the culture of the organisation and the availability of key resources.

Design of the organisation is all too often either left well alone because of the negative aspects of power politics, or is completed as a basis for growing the power base of select individuals and teams. A recipe for excess overhead costs and poor performance if ever there was one!

Process Development

Organisations exist to create value for their stakeholders. Value is created as a result of linked activities that can best be described as processes.

Process Development is a critical success factor in the design and ongoing management and improvement of performance leading work environments.

We once had the privilege to meet the distinguished Professor of International Marketing Philip Kotler over dinner at the Ritz in London. He set out a very simple yet profound approach to process development. He said that everyone works in a process, there are only three processes, and you can only work in one of them at a time. His three processes were market development, product development and operational development.

If we could have 10 Euros for every manager that has told us that their work is too complex or creative to be thought of as a process, then we could afford be on permanent holiday in the sunshine.

Business Planning

Plans set out your statement of intent, be they strategic, operational or team plans. They provide details of how you are going to develop your strategy, when you are going to do things, who is going to play a part and how you will manage resources.

Plans are part of the communication and commitment process started during strategy formulation. They capture agreements in terms of commitments to provide people, finance and other forms of resources, and provide confidence to stakeholders who buy into a well thought through set of tactics, and to the organisation that will ultimately deliver results.

All too frequently organisations treat planning as a bureaucratic and somewhat unrealistic hurdle to get through, more to do with operation control than setting up for success.

Opportunity and Risk Management

Life is full of uncertainty. Opportunity and risk management is the systematic approach to forecasting uncertainties that might impact your organisation in terms of probabilities of occurrence, benefits and losses. It integrates recognition of opportunities and risks, assessments, developing strategies to manage exploitation of opportunities and mitigation of risk using managerial resources.

For many sectors, risk management is a ‘bread and butter’ part of their operations with a variety of specialised risk management techniques developed to address their particular needs. Less common is the systemic evaluation of opportunities as a result of uncertainty. Performance-leading organisations routinely and rigorously address both opportunities and risks as part of their everyday operations.

Performance Leadership incorporates leading practices in enterprise and operational opportunity and risk management.

Their use can nevertheless be very problematic, balancing decisions about relative uncertainties when faced with a limit on available knowledge. For this reason, TRIMENTIS introduces a dynamic model with visibility provided up and down the line management structure.
